Yes I know I haven't written a review since the first one, that's my fault entirely I'll be sure to get on this last half of the season more.
So here it is... finally the pro-bending championship match between the Fire Ferrets and those jerks we met last week, I mean the Wolf-Bats. The episode begins with Amon promising to do some damage if the match goes on as planned and commands the council to end it or there will be some dire consequences. Korra and the Fire Ferrets beg the council to reconsider and after some prodding by an unexpected ally, Ms. Little Toph herself, Chief Lin Bei Fong, they decide to let the match happen.
And so the match goes as planned. There's a little bit of cheating that goes overlooked by the refs, the Fire Ferrets ultimately lose, and Amon goes on to take the Wolf Bats' bending away while he introduces an electric gauntlet that he wishes Equalists to use to "equalize" themselves with benders. But let's examine this all before I give this episode a score. I've read some critics' distaste for the pro-bending segments, and I can't blame them due to last week's episode, but pro-bending gives us fans new and old a different style of bending that we've never seen before, so I'm glad that we had pro-bending and I look forward to it next season.
The writers expertly gave Lin some sympathy this week, we know that she's cold and lacks compassion, but her backstory was very interesting. Who knew that Pema stole Tenzin away from her? She really developed as a character towards the end of the episode and I'm anxious to see more team-ups with her and our other heroes.
Korra had another flashback (and this one had a six-fingered Toph in it, haha animation accident!) but now we can see that the more danger she gets in, the more likely we'll see a flashback. I still believe that this is Aang trying to contact Korra and eventually leading to her entering the Avatar State. She also showed off her prowess at firebending and the skill she now has with fighting chi-blockers. I'm still amazed by that last fighting sequence between her and Lin. And of course we can't forget her hilarious, and greatly animated tiebreaker with Tahno, the Wolf-Bat's captain.
So with some good character develop from characters that have been in the background, a scary new invention and new threat from Amon, some amazing pro-bending and another flashback about Aang and the gang, I believe that this episode was the best yet. I'll give it a 9.5 out of 10.
