This year Comic Con International decided to try a new method of preregistration. Instead of trying to push six-hundred thousand people through a gopher hole, they would allow people to check into a waiting room early, where eventually they would receive a randomized place in line. At this time, the registration process has been underway for about a half hour and there are little to no reports of website failure as we have seen in the past.
Initially, many people were upset with this new "lottery" system. They felt that if you arrived early you should be rewarded more than the shmoe who arrived at the last minute. While this is a valid point, with the previous track record of website failure, getting in at the earliest possible time could still leave you staring at the infinitely spinning buffer wheel. In a sense, the old system also relied heavily on chance.
With the new system you are also allowed to make purchases for up to three valid member ID's including your own. If your group has access to a large enough pool of money, you might only need one of you to get lucky enough. In fact, all of the Staff here at Capes and Cons were able to purchase badges for the entire convention (including preview night) because of this shopping cart feature.
Compared to the last couple of years, this year seemed incredibly smooth and without hiccups. While I'm sure that some were unfortunate enough to not receive a feasible place in line, there will be fewer disgruntled hopeful-attendees.
